Thursday 24 September marks United Nations World Maritime Day 2015. WMD highlights the importance of shipping safety, maritime security and the marine environment and each year emphasises a particular aspect of the IMO’s work.
This year the theme is: Maritime education and training
The IMO sets international maritime standards through a number of conventions and guidelines. One of these conventions is the Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping Convention (STCW) – covering training and professional standards for seafarers.
“Equally important, for the maintenance of maritime trade is training in the specific area of freight movement between ship and shore. Shipping Australia offers online training courses to facilitate this”, Shipping Australia CEO Rod Nairn said.
“Courses include: Introduction to Shipping, Fundamentals of Shipping and Reefer Cargo Handling. These courses are a convenient way to educate and upskill staff in the shipping sector.”
This World Maritime Day helps to put the focus on the importance of maritime education and training. “Training and career development is important in any company or organisation”, Nairn said.
Australians should join the global community to recognise and celebrate the essential contribution of the maritime industry to the world’s development and prosperity.
