Shipping Australia Ltd, in conjunction with the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission and the Department of Infrastructure and Regional Development, today conducted an a workshop on matters concerning ocean carrier’s compliance with the requirements of Part X of the Competition and Consumer Act.
Highlights of the event were the overview of the shipping registrar’s interpretation of Part X requirements presented by General Manager Maritime and Shipping Branch, Michael Sutton and the details of compliance concerns identified by the ACCC which were presented by Senior Investigator Shayne Riley. Shipping Australia’s General Manager Liner Shipping Services, Andrew Chittenden rounded out the presentations with a summary of the industry’s response to the ACCC’s concerns and recommended measures to support carriers more stringent adherence to the Part X obligations.
Attendees agreed that the workshop gave them a higher level of understanding of the nuances of Part X regulations and the associated compliance obligations of carriers. The outcome of stronger compliance will be reduced risk of penalties for shipping companies.
